AI is now poised to start writing books in the voice of established authors. In an ill-informed decision, courts have determined that Anthropic’s large language model (LLM) training was “fair use,” and that it could legally scan books bought lawfully. Copyright law allows “fair use”, meaning that a copyrighted work can be used to create “new work” based on the original. But the law was never intended to allow copy-cat creations, thus diminishing the audience and reputation of the original human creators.
